Symbolic Sculptures

In grades 6 and 7, students embarked on meaningful service projects aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These global objectives, aiming at transforming the world by 2030, provided a powerful framework for student engagement.

This unit empowered students to become artivists and advocate for change through the creation of meaningful artworks, therefore creating connections between Art and Service learning. Students inquired into the symbolism in visual arts and explored the potential of sculpture as a catalyst for positive change. By using the hand casting process, students created unique sculptures that used symbolism related to their chosen SDGs, conveying concerns about human rights, peace, and sustainability.

In this unit, students developed a deeper understanding of social issues, honed their artistic skills, and gained a sense of empowerment. They learned the power of art as a catalyst for social transformation, and became active participants in shaping a more equitable and sustainable future.
